Monorail board should slash staff

Now that they've been forced to put their latest plan-for-a-train on the ballot once again, the Seattle Monorail Project's board should take the next step to demonstrate that they're actually able to face reality.

The board should act quickly to drastically slash staffing at the agency. They should follow the lead of Cascadia Monorail, the company that would have designed, built, and maintained the train line. According to The Seattle Times, Cascadia acted quickly to cut its staff "from about eight people to two to work on other projects, and packing boxes to take from the team's Westlake Center office."

SMP should follow their lead. Agency staff should immediately to cut to the bone. There is nothing left for them to do until at least November -- especially since there is no longer a contractor for SMP staff to work with.

Actually, they already cut staff dramatically back in July.

Yes. They did cut staff in July. But it's time now for another round of severe cuts. The project is now in limbo, so it would be irresponsible to maintain staff to do anything but prepare archives for an eventual shutdown.

While it waits for a vote, the project needs to conserve as much as possible of the $1 million per week that it continues to collect from taxpayers in Seattle.
