Finally. An end to the monorail silliness

The Seattle City Council has managed to grow the backbone they've been lacking for far too long when it comes to the trainwrecked Seattle Monorail Project.

In a just-concluded meeting broadcast (as all their meeting are) on Seattle Channel, the Council rescinded the city's transit-way agreement with SMP.

The Council doesn't have the power to end this project, but, as Richard McIver noted, this vote should make it impossible for the dysfunctional SMP board to float additional bonds. The project is still burning through $1million per week, but must now face the reality that they should have recognized years ago and hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars ago: This project is a pipedream that can't be built.

Now -- although it's unlikely -- let's just hope that this boondoggle hasn't made it impossible to fund workable mass-transit solutions to regional traffic problems.
