![]() Friday, September 23, 2005 Is monorail now a "train to nowhere"?
Will monorail proponants now start calling their still irrationally expensive line a "train to nowhere"?From the PI: The Seattle Monorail Board this afternoon decided unanimously to ask voters in November to approve a 10.6-mile monorail line from the Alaska Junction in West Seattle to West Dravus Street in Interbay. Partisans for the monorail often call Sound Transit's rapid transit route a "train to nowhere". They called it that even though the light-rail sytem, which is under construction, will serve downtown, Mount Baker, Rainier Valley, and Tukwilla. But that's "nowhere" to these folks. So I'll be interested to see if these folks start using the same term to describe the new but only slightly more buildable monorail route. The City Council and Mayor forced the SMP board to face reality just long enough to put the deeply flawed system up for yet another vote. That means they'll be able to keep on spending their million dollars a week for something that's unlikely to ever cause even a spade of dirt to be turned for an actual transit project. That's too bad, of course. But it at least makes it likely that they'll stop wasting our money a few weeks earlier than they would have if we'd been forced to wait for the legislature to disband the boondoggle after the new session starts in January.
