Move LGBT Pride Festival? OK. But keep parade on Broadway.

I sent the following to Seattle Pride in response to their request for public comments on their plan to move Pride activities:

I don't object to your plan to move Pride Festival activities from Volunteer Park to Seattle Center. I believe that the Center's facilities are far more appropriate for festival-like activities and that SPC might be able to make events there attractive enough to draw even more people to a wider range of activities.

I think it's a huge mistake, however, to move the parade/march off of Broadway to 4th Ave or any other downtown route.

That you're thinking of moving the march shows that you misunderstand its prime purpose. It isn't just a feeding mechanism for a rally or festival. It is a chance to groups and people of all queer stripes to revel for a day in their queerness. It's a chance to own the street for at least one day. Just about anyone can own the Denny Regrade portion of 4th on a Sunday since it isn't all that active a street. Scheduling a parade down there on a Sunday afternoon seems more than anything else a way to hide it. It's entirely the wrong approach to be taking.

Keep the parade on Broadway.

Consider alternatives like switching its direction if you can find workable staging areas on the north end of Broadway. (There might be options on both of the parallel streets if the parade were to set its starting point at Roy St.) But any of the alternatives must keep it on that active Broadway route and not try to move it
downtown.

Please recognize that the parade has its own constituency. It isn't just a feeding mechanism for your entertainment festival. Although many who participate in or watch the parade might at least drop by the festival, many more do not. The parade deserves more attention than your group seems interested in giving it.

SPC seems mostly interested in its festival. You did a dreadful job this year with parade management, but a great job with festival management. That probably is an indication of your group's priorities. Perhaps you should consider handing parade-organizing duties off to a related but separate group that could devote the energy to the parade/march that it deserves.
